Recreation and Environment
Exning Recreation Ground: Pedestrian access only via Chapel Street (opposite the junction with New River Green), Oxford Street (beside Fringes Hairdressers), St Wendred’s Way, Lacey’s Lane, Prince’s Close and Queensway.
The Parish Council has responsibility for the half of the recreation ground containing the play area.
Suffolk County Council Education Authority has responsibility for the half of the recreation ground nearest Exning Primary School, which also is the location for Stepping Stones Pre-School.
Exning Play Area and Fitness Equipment: The fenced play area, the adult gym equipment and the aerial runway are owned and maintained by the Parish Council. The equipment is checked for safety weekly by the Parish Council and monthly by West Suffolk Council.
Park Furniture: Benches, picnic tables and the covered seating shelter are owned, checked and maintained by the Parish Council.
Trees: The Parish Council has responsibility for trees in St Martin’s Churchyard, Exning Road Old Cemetery, Lacey’s Lane Cemetery and some areas of Exning Recreation Ground. Tree surveys are carried out regularly by qualified arboriculturalists and any necessary work undertaken as advised by them.
Litter: The Parish Council Village Keepers litter pick most areas of the village weekly. The Council has some litter picking equipment which may be loaned on occasion by the public and community groups on application to the Clerk.
Fly Tipping: It is an offence to dump rubbish and fly-tipping can be reported to West Suffolk Council via its website, email customerservices@westsuffolk.gov.uk or by telephone 01284 763233.
Dog Fouling and Out-of-Control Dogs: West Suffolk Council provides most of the dog bins in the village, with the Parish Council supplementing these in certain areas. However, any public bin may be used to dispose of bagged and sealed dog waste. Allowing dogs to foul the highway is an offence and West Suffolk Council can be contacted in confidence to report the details of owners. Our Village Keepers use fluorescent, biodegradable spray to highlight dog fouling on the footways. This assists the public when walking, but also brings the matter to the attention of dog walkers in the area.
If a dog is felt to be out-of-control, it should be reported to the police via 101 – or 999 in an emergency.
Waste Removal & Public Hygiene: Dead animals on the highway can be reported to West Suffolk Council for removal, along with any other public hygiene concerns.
Street Sweeping & Cleansing: West Suffolk Council are the street cleansing authority.
Grass Cutting: Exning Parish Council is responsible for the grass and grounds maintenance in the cemeteries and churchyard and the recreation ground. Most of the grass verges are maintained by West Suffolk Council.
Exning watercourse (New River): Exning Parish Council has no riparian responsibilities. The Exning New River Association (ENRA) is a group of residents with riparian responsibilities and other interested parties working on the improvement and conservation of the chalk stream.
Exning Cemeteries: Lacey’s Lane Cemetery, Exning Road Old Cemetery and St Martin’s Churchyard.
Exning War Memorial: The Parish Council maintains the war memorial and the area at the White Horse junction. It provides the remembrance ceremony each November.
